Working together

Virtual Dietitian

I'm Paige Hartnett, RD LDN — a virtual, non-diet dietitian based in Charlotte, NC, seeing clients across the U.S. All sessions are secure video. Below are the questions I get most about working together online.

How does working with a virtual dietitian actually work?

Sessions happen over a secure video platform — you show up on your laptop or phone from wherever you are. Booking is through Nourish, which runs the insurance eligibility check and handles scheduling. Between sessions, you have access to me by messaging for the smaller questions that come up mid-week. There is no food log to fill out, no app to check in on daily. There's still attention. Just not surveillance. The work happens in the sessions, and in the small experiments we set between them.

Is virtual as effective as in-person?

In my experience, yes — and often more so. Virtual sessions remove the biggest logistical barrier to consistency: getting somewhere. Clients who might have canceled a Wednesday in-person appointment because a meeting ran long are still there for a virtual one. I have run this practice virtually for years, and the depth of the work has not changed. The bond, the honesty, the follow-through — all fine on video.

What do we work on together in a virtual session?

The specifics depend on what you bring in, but the recurring themes are: hearing your body's hunger and fullness signals again after years of overriding them (fuller version: how to actually know when you're hungry); understanding why evenings and weekends tend to unravel and rebuilding the daytime structure that fixes it (why you 'unravel' at night); untangling the rules that make food feel charged; and building skills that hold up in a real life — restaurants, holidays, hard weeks, illness. I do not hand out meal plans.

Who is a virtual dietitian best for?

Virtual works well if your schedule is busy or unpredictable, if you live somewhere without local non-diet providers, if you'd rather do the work from your own space, or if you've had experiences with in-person nutrition care that felt clinical or judgmental. Clients based in Charlotte, NC and the surrounding areas often choose virtual for the same reasons. If you need a specific in-person modality (metabolic testing, hands-on refeeding under medical supervision), a virtual dietitian is not your first stop — and I'll say so.

Do virtual dietitians take insurance?

Often, yes. Through Nourish, many insurance plans cover 1:1 virtual sessions in full. Coverage varies by state and by plan — Nourish runs the check on the booking page before you commit. If your plan isn't covered, cash-pay is an option, and if cash-pay isn't a fit I'll help you find a non-diet RD who is licensed where you live. For clients who want a structured private program, the 12-Week Program is private-pay: $1,097 founding rate (or 3 monthly payments of $389) for cohort one, application only.

How often will we meet?

It depends on where you're starting. Most clients begin weekly or every-other-week for the first few sessions to build momentum, then stretch out to monthly (or less frequent) as their footing improves. There is no fixed package and you can adjust as we go. If you'd rather commit to a defined arc from the start, the 12-Week Program has a set structure — three phases, defined touchpoints, and a program-complete call.

Why Paige?

I'm a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist. I earned my bachelor's at the University of Florida and completed my dietetic internship at Meredith College. I spent a decade in hospitals and at eating disorder treatment centers before moving to private practice. My approach is non-diet, HAES-aligned, and gentler than diet culture would have you believe. If you want the fuller version — credentials, states served, the whole thing — my about page has it. If you're ready, book a session through Nourish or apply for the 12-Week Program below.
